McCain Respects Chuck Hagel’s Iraq Views

From the Omaha World-Herald:

McCain praises Hagel on fundraising visit here

BY ROBYNN TYSVER

Thursday July 17, 2008

ASHLAND, Neb. - Presidential candidate John McCain may have differences with Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel, but he made it clear Wednesday that he respects his fellow Republican’s views on the Iraq war.

McCain said that Hagel’s criticism of the war, unlike Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s, amounts to an “informed decision” because of the time Hagel has spent in Iraq and studying the issue, McCain said.

This was McCain’s first campaign trip to Nebraska. The Arizona senator, here to raise money for his presidential bid, praised Hagel and declined to talk about speculation that his Republican colleague and fellow Vietnam veteran might be in the running to become Obama’s vice president.

Hagel is in the Middle East on a trip with Obama, who is making his first trip to Iraq…

“Chuck Hagel and I are the dearest and closest of friends,” said McCain, who toured Werner Enterprises, a Nebraska trucking company, before he went to the Ashland fundraiser.

“I respect his views,” McCain said. “We’ve had some disagreements on the Iraq war. But, I’m certainly pleased Senator Obama is being accompanied by Chuck Hagel, who has military experience and who has knowledge of the issues.” …

McCain respects Chuck Hagel’s views on the Iraq war?

Why? He simply wants us to surrender, just like Barack Hussein Obama does.

So what is the difference?

Because Hagel has “studied the issue”? Will McCain respect Obama’s views once he has “studied the issue”?

This is madness.

Four martinis, please.

Just one example of Chuck Hagel’s deep thoughts on the issue, from the yellowing archives of the Associated Press:

Hagel: Iraq war has destabilized Mideast, resembles Vietnam

    Sunday, August 21, 2005

WASHINGTON (AP) — A leading Republican senator and decorated Vietnam War veteran said Sunday the Iraq war has destabilized the Mideast and is looking more like the Vietnam conflict a generation ago.

Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel, who received two Purple Hearts and other military honors for his service in Vietnam, reiterated his position that the United States needs to develop a strategy to leave Iraq.

Hagel scoffed at the idea that U.S. troops could be in Iraq four years from now at levels above 100,000, a contingency for which the Pentagon is preparing.

“We should start figuring out how we get out of there,” Hagel said on “This Week” on ABC. “But with this understanding, we cannot leave a vacuum that further destabilizes the Middle East. I think our involvement there has destabilized the Middle East. And the longer we stay there, I think the further destabilization will occur.”

Where did the people of Nebraska find that bozo?

    What a pandererererer…

McCain so reminds one of a Clinton, who will say anything, circle all the positions, take every side, placate any thing for personal gain.

    It is deeply concerning.

All the more reason to take back the HOUSE and Senate from the pathetic Democrats…

The same Liberal Democrats who promised to reform Earmarks - Pork Spending prior to 2006!

So, McCain thinks Obama is inspirational, and he respects Hagel’s ‘informed’ opinion…why am I supposed to be voting for him again?

    Oh yeah, its ‘his turn’

Bartender, hit me again…make it a double

  5. Rob

Despite whatever talk is about there’s no possibility of Obama picking Hagel as his running mate. As transactional as these things are in the GOP, it’s much worse among the Democrats. Obama can’t give a plum to somebody who hasn’t paid his dues to the Democrat Party.

    Hagel’s retiring this year, anyway.

  6. Grumpy

I’m depressed. Every time I visit I see another reason NOT to vote for McC. Is there anything good ? (other than not being BHO, but sometimes I even wonder about that.) My liver can’t take a whole lot more of this.

    Yo! Barkeep!

  7. SkepticalOne

Time to just start mainlining Everclear to come up with a way to vote for McCain. The only reason to vote for him is that he ISN’T Obama. Not a very good reason.

  8. Sir Corky

    SkepticalOne,

Yeah, I’m gonna need something a little stronger than a martini. I might just bring some Black Label into the voting booth with me, down the bottle, pass out on the machine, and see what I hit on the way down.

I just finished reading this post and thought, “Is liquor going to be enough for November?” It seems I am not alone in that feeling…

What we really need is a new drink called the “McCain”. My suggestion:

    1 1/2 oz Wild Turkey
    1/2 oz creme de almond
1 1/2 oz sweet and sour mix
    1/2 oz triple sec
    1 1/2 oz lemonade

I have no idea what it might taste like - it’s an Americanization/bourbonization of the rum zombie, which seemed apropos. Maybe I’ll make it tomorrow night. Probably it will taste like shit, but hey! So will voting for McCain.

This election day here is what I am drinking.

1 shot of 100 proof American Corn Liquor. After every sip I am going to refill the glass with tequila.

I call it my Comprehensive Intoxication Plan. Yeah, I am eventually going to vomit but its good practice for McCain’s “Comprehensive Immigration Plan” which is REALLY going to make me sick.

Has Mc Cain found any liberal in this country that he hasn’t prasied? If Mc Cain doesn’t win this year I’m sure Chucky-poo, will make a wonderful presidential timber come 2012! We need a blue-blood transfuision for this party and quick. Now I’ve got to get back to the bar, customers are waiting!

Brian talks about Obama, McCain, and Hagel in a note to his MOM!

    EXCLUSIVE: Brian Williams Writes Home…

NOTE: My nephew occasionally goes into New York for his job and last night, while walking past the GE building, he came across this note, which had apparently been dropped by Williams as he left the building following his nightly newscast. Hat tip to my nephew for typing up the note and sending the contents along to me via email.

Gee, it’s even on the actual GE memo/letterhead, too!!!

Daffy Duck? Did someone say Daffy was a contender?
I thought his 2ND term was ending.

This reminds me of representative JOE DONNELLEY’s remarks he made at Notre Dame earlier this year when he gave a talk about abortion - he claimed that he “respects all views” considering abortion.

    REALLY!?!?

So, he respects views that state its fine to violently murder babies through 9 months (and even after birth in Obama’s case)??

If that’s the kind of intellectually debased stuff he respects then I don’t want his respect.

    Ditto for McKennedy.

Maybe McCain is following Reagan’s 11th Commandment.

Maybe he is going easy against a fellow combat veteran.

I have a lot of dissatisfaction with McCain, but this incident isn’t part of it.

  18. Charles Hatton

As a Mormon, what do I do?

I don’t drink, snort, or toke.

Hot cocoa doesn’t quite give me the motivation to pull it for McCain?

  19. Scipio

McCain is a piece of dog crap as a candidate. Nevertheless I am going to get drunk and leave an absentee ballot for him (I plan on being in Prague/Budapest the week of the election as I do not want to witness the crowing in my liberal office in NYC when the Obamessiah wins) since I know that B. Hussein Obama will be a domestic and foreign policy disaster. Thank you Republican primary voters for your lunatic sense of primogeniture (the same promogeniture which gave us Bob Dole. G.W. Bush and probably Jeb Bush in 2012) and giving us that cranky old bastard as a candidate. By the way Hagel’s (an Israel hater in the mold of former RINO Sen. Chuck Percy of Illinois) wife has contributed to B. Hussein Obama’s campaign war chest. What the hell is the matter with Red States such as Nebraska voting in people like Hagel (who I think is partly crazy)?

  20. dollymadison

Charles Hatton, Maybe you can motivate yourself by thinking about having physical relations with you wives.

telling a bartender to ‘make it snappy’ is a good way to get a shitty drink…maybe even some spit in there

a disconcerting piece of news for the mccain campaign is that Iraqi prime minister al-Maliki has actually endorsed barack obama’s plan to withdraw from iraq in 16 months. apparently the iraqi government feels that this is enough time to create the transition into autonomy, without having the US ’surrender’.

    http://elections.foxnews.com/2.....timetable/

mccain needs to do some damage control, fast. since staying in iraq without a timetable is a cornerstone of his campaign this could do significant damage

  23. bpjam

I’m afraid my ‘martini count’ is going to need to turn into a ‘Bottle of Bombay Gin’ count. A single martini at a time will still allow me to be concious enough to realize that McCain is my ‘best’ choice in November.

  24. bpjam

You know, if John Kerry has been a black man maybe he would have been heralded for his statements about how US Forces were ‘killing and terrorizing women and children’ in the dead of night. Obama sounds pretty much identical with his complaint that in Afghanistan all we are doing is ‘bombing villages and killing civilians’.

Apparently, the US Military most spends it’s time not trying to find Al Qaeda but rather finding civilians around the world to kill and harass. Sadly, Obama will be 97% of the black servicemen vote despite his slanderous statements about them and their fellow soldiers. And yet Obama will be working hard to ensure that military servicemen servicing overseas have as may barriers as possible to voting in November just like Algore did in 2000.
